How to Backup Your MySQL Database via SSH

Introduction Backing up your MySQL Database via SSH is a simple and straightforward task, and is extremely useful for exporting large databases or backup automation scripts. In this KB Article I am going to show you two ways to create a MySQL Database Backup via SSH, as well as how to restore those backups. Prerequisites SSH is disabled by default as a preventative security measure. Please submit a ticket requesting access so that we can enable SSH for your account. Manual Backup of Your MySQL Database Exporting a MySQL Database To export a MySQL Database, paste the following command into your SSH Terminal. mysqldump -p -u username database_name > database-filename.sql Replace `username` with your username, `database_name` with the name of the database you'd like to export, and `database-filename.sql` to whatever you'd like to name your database export. After you hit enter, you'll be prompted for a password. Enter the password to your account, and then hit enter to continue. If all goes as expected, it should begin dumping the MySQL Database. After the MySQL Dump is complete, you can download your database by logging into your Web Dashboard and navigating to your database export within the File Manager. Importing a MySQL Database To import a MySQL Database, paste the following command into your SSH Terminal. mysql -p -u username database_name < database-filename.sql Replace `username` with your username, `database_name` with the name of the database you'd like to import into, and `database-filename.sql` to the name of your MySQL Dump. After you hit enter, you'll be prompted for a password. Enter the password to your account, and then hit enter to continue. If all goes as expected, it should begin restoring your MySQL Database. Warning When importing a MySQL Database, we highly recommend uploading the database dump to your /home directory. Uploading it to your /public_html directory is never recommended, as your database would then be exposed to the internet.
